The Ely Folk School commits to creating programs and opportunities that are welcoming to everyone, regardless of financial circumstances. To work toward this, we utilize a sliding scale pricing model that allows each person to choose a payment level that aligns with their financial situation.

We like to compare our tiered payment system to a Pay It Forward system. Have you ever paid for the coffee for the person behind you in line? This system is a way to do that with someone’s class tuition.

How the Sliding Scale Works

There are three tiers at which you can pay for class. The Standard Price displays first - this is what we need to take in per class to account for space, administration, and instructor pay. It will also include the cost of materials that you will use in class. The materials fee will be broken down in the class description.

The Supporting Price is the “Pay-It-Forward” option while the Scaled Price is available for those who face financial challenges on a regular basis.

This tier supports EFS’ commitment to this system and supports your neighbors’ ability to take a class themselves, even during a time of more financial hardship.

This tier reflects the cost of class -  space, administration, and instructor pay.

If you are unable to pay full-price, this tier is here for you.

Why Sliding Scale Pricing?

This system isn’t just about financial transactions—it’s about fostering a community rooted in mutual support and inclusivity. Those who are able to pay more help subsidize the cost for those who cannot, ensuring that everyone has access to enriching educational and creative experiences.

By choosing your payment level with intention, you’re helping us build a sustainable and equitable community.

Do You Offer Scholarships?

We do not offer scholarships. Instead, we’ve chosen a sliding scale model that puts the power in your hands. This approach allows participants to self-identify their financial situation without the need for applications or proving financial need. It’s a way to maintain dignity and simplicity while enabling our staff to focus on working with instructors and students to ensure quality classes rather than assessing financial qualifications.

Are There Other Ways to Take a Class if I Can’t Currently Afford the Full Price?

Absolutely! Volunteering with the Ely Folk School is a wonderful way to earn credit toward classes while giving back to the community. Volunteering opportunities range from event support to administrative tasks, and every hour you give helps us continue our mission. You can view information about volunteering here or reach out directly to our Program Director, Anna Heil, with any questions.

How Do You Price Your Classes?

Our classes are priced per class hour. Materials costs vary widely depending on the class, with some as low as $3 and others exceeding $100. Each class description provides detailed information about what is included in the price, so you know exactly what to expect.

How to Decide What to Pay

We encourage you to reflect on your financial circumstances and use the guidance above to select a payment level that feels right for you. Paying at the higher end of the scale enables us to continue offering this flexible pricing model, while paying less ensures your access to our programs during times of financial hardship.

Folk Education Should Be for Everyone

Our sliding scale model is a shared commitment to equity, accessibility, and the joy of learning. Thank you for contributing to a community where everyone can thrive and grow through the arts and education. We need to balance access, sustainability of the organization, and paying instructors well - the sliding scale is a way to contribute in small ways to the financial and educational well-being of our community as a whole.
